Tim Karpishin

Tim grew up in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, where attended the University of British Columbia and graduated with a BS in Chemistry.  He then pursued his PhD in Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, studying organic chemistry directed towards medicinal research.  After postdoctoral studies at the California Institute of Technology, he embarked upon his academic career as a Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, San Diego, where he studied enzymes as well as designed molecules for solar-energy research.  He then spent two decades in the field of biotechnology developing diagnostic products for cancer research.

Tim loves chemistry and science and explaining to students the connections of chemistry to all of life’s pursuits.  Looking at life through the lens of a scientist provides students with the ability to understand things at the molecular level, but also be skeptical about some of the information we are exposed to.  Tim has taught chemistry at the college level and tutored high-school students one-on-one in chemistry and biology.  Tim strives to provide his students with a strong foundation of science and a comprehension of the connectivity between various fields such as medicine, nutrition, and environmental studies.

Tim enjoys cooking, gardening, playing guitar, running, skiing, and painting.  Tim also loves being outdoors as much as possible and finding new places to explore.
