Sarah was born and raised in Palo Alto and has been a part of SIL since 2020 as an American Sign Language teacher. Why does Sarah teach ASL? In her own words: “my parents discovered that I was profoundly deaf when I was three years old; therefore, I did not receive any sort of listening devices until that time. This put me at a disadvantage in learning how to listen and speak. It wasn’t until I started high school when I learned ASL. It has been my primary language since then. Once technology improved, I got cochlear implants when I was 25 years old and use them consistently every day. I am currently working full time at the Redwood City School District as an Educational Interpreter. After several years at Redwood City, I learned that I love to teach, so I decided to go back to school to get a degree in Deaf Education. I have a Deaf husband and two Deaf children; one is a junior in college and the other is a senior in high school. During my free time, I love to spend time with my family and 2 dogs, hike, ski, bike, and run marathons.”
