Katy Christie

Katy Christie

Katy teaches math at SIL and holds a particular fondness for calculus. She has always enjoyed logic puzzles and considers math to be great fun. She opines that numbers make great toys, and her ultimate goal is to get her students to have as much fun with them as she does.

Katy believes strongly in the importance of being able to translate between real world situations, language, and math. Because of this, she tends to use real-life and visual examples in order to demonstrate concepts to students. When a student has a strong understanding of what math means in a real-world sense, it becomes much more accessible and enjoyable. Katy is also committed to building students’ self-confidence, as she believes that is just as critical to their success as comprehension.

Katy is from Arlington, Virginia, and received her BA in Mathematics from Lawrence University. She spent several years dabbling in computer programming and website design while doing math tutoring on the side. Eventually she fell into teaching full time and has never looked back. In her spare time, she enjoys reading and writing fanfiction, drawing, and spoiling her mother’s cat.
